Kromann Reumert appointed schmidt hammer lassen design to carry out the thorough renovation and new refurbishing of their headquarters on the Rådhuspladsen in Aarhus. The building is designed by Salling Mortensen around 1914 and creates an impressing yet simple composition around the city square together with the city hall designed by Arne Jacobsen, which is located at the other side of the square. As any modern company in growth, the physical frames became too narrow and obsolescent for the company. The solution to these problems was an enlargement of the available space; more m2 were added. The offices were renovated and turned into modern, representative and functional surroundings for Kromann Reumers and their clients.
client: Kromann Reumert, Cph, Denmark
completed: 2002
The new Kromann Reumert headquarters is a highly distinctive and thoroughly resolved office building whose furnishings and fixtures, as regards both design and materials, maintain a continuity with the elegant idiom and character of the building itself. The interior design project encompasses both design and the selection of furnishings and fittings for the building’s various functional areas. The fixed furnishings include the design of countertops, furniture for sitting and waiting areas, canteen and café furniture, library shelving, cloakrooms, storage furniture for meeting rooms, outdoor lighting fixtures and outdoor seating.

When cfl (center for management) contacted schmidt hammer lassen design, the had been struggeling with the functionality of their reception area in combination with a changing organisation and new ways of working. The space had simply become too crowded and challenging to use and approach as both employee and as a visitor. They needed to update the funtions, to adapt to changed ways of using the space and to send out a clear message; the space is here to be used!

A typical appartment in a building from around 1900 - small space placed next to the back stairs of the appartment and with the orginal storage room now transformed into a bathroom. With this placement the kitchen actually had turned into a passage and a very difficult room to decorate because of all the doors and various functions blocking for a rational kitchen interior. By twisting the traditional way of using straight lines, we managed to use almost only standard basic elements and create a perfect solution for not only kitchen but also for the bathroom…
client: LETT Lawfirm, Aarhus, Denmark

After only two years in their new domicile in a modern highrise building i Aarhus, LETT needed more space and hade to move to a new location. A new building under construction at the City Hall Square in Aarhus was chosen and the challenge for the interior and design project was to integrate the entire organisation split up on 3 flores without loosing the feeling of beeing one united company. An important issue was to place the main entrance, reception, lounge, meeting and canteen area at one and same level. In this way every employee and guest would pass by the reception on the way in and out and at the same time everyone would during the day benefit from the location on the top floor.
client: Restaurant Søren K
completed: 1999
Restaurant Søren K is situated in the Royal Library in Copenhagen, and enjoys a magnificent panoramic view of the city’s harbour entrance. In terms of design character and materials, the restaurant exhibits continuity with the design idiom and character of the library. The materials palette is restricted, comprising concrete, sandstone, oiled maple, pale leather and stainless steel surfaces - with textures accentuated by the lighting. In the restaurant, a clean simplicity delivers a backdrop which heightens the aesthetic dimension of the culinary experience as well as that of social interaction and the sense of presence.

Two holes in a wall was basically what was needed to change the extisting kitchen from “normal” including various compromises, to “extraordinary” where this familys dream of a kitchen came through. After a simple analysis of needs, functions, moovements and possibilities for a few simple changes in the construction, this kitchen changed into a more spacious room with more space for work, guests and the every daily life. At the same time much better conditions was created for better storage, functionality and quite simply better life quality.
client: Formuepleje, Aarhus, Denmark
completed: 2005
The company Formuepleje wished to move from a classical building into a floor of the modern and newly built `KPMG-house´ in the center of Århus. Formuepleje preferred avoiding meetings with the clients in the meeting- and conference-facilities high up in the tall building, this being the reason why the design of the interior turned into a mix of cell-offices and open offices, also providing space enough for client-meetings. In one end of the 50-meter long space, a row of offices along the facade was established. All partition walls are made of clear glass to maintain maximum contact between the smaller offices and the open office space.

The interior design of the Royal Library at Slotsholmen in Copenhagen represents a continuation, in terms of design and materials, of the building’s essentially simple design concept and general character. The project comprises the design of fixtures and fittings as well as the choice of moveable furnishings and standard components for all the library’s diverse sections and functions: reading rooms, administration areas, restaurant and canteen, exhibition spaces, shop, foyer and public service areas. Fixtures and fittings include service counters, reading room tables with task lighting, as well as seating furniture, bars and buffets in the restaurant. Moveable furniture includes the adjustment and fitting of standard shelving, choice of reading room chairs, rest seating, plus tables and chairs for the restaurant and canteen. client: NRGi, Aarhus, Denmark

When NRGi decided to leave their old domicile and selected schmidt hammer lassen for the design and construction of their new, modern headquarters, they chose schmidt hammer lassen design to carry out the entire interior and design program for the building. They too decided on moving from primary single cell-offices to a largely open-office structure. Some administrative functions and particular departments are still located in smaller, secluded areas because of the discretion requested by meetings and by particular tasks. The new headquarters of NRGi is an energy optimized house, with energy saving initiatives built into the technical control systems of the house and into the design and structure of the building itself.

As schmidt hammer lassen architects in 2002 got the task of renovating, refurbishing and extend the existing domicile of Danfoss in Nordborg on Als, schmidt hammer lassen design was quickly involved with the project. This developed into an intense collaboration, in which all details were treated with the same care and attention.
Halmstad Library is set in a parkland space on the River Nissan, overlooking Halmstad’s historical core. With a circular atrium set around a large existing chestnut tree - its fulcrum - and the long concave façade with double-height glazing ‘distended’ between two white horizontal ‘floating’ plates, nature, the seasons and the city all become part of the library. Inside, the library is essentially a single open space, flexible and highly legible: an open structure which allows an active interplay between the columns and the trunks of the trees outside.
client: Växjö Municipality
completed: 2003
The City Library consists of a new building and a careful renovation of the existing library, designed by the architect Uluot in 1965. The extension is an independent, circular volume, which meets the the square shape of the main volume through a glass volume in-between the two. The building as well as the interior consists of a mix of existing and new elements, combined in a way that creates a unity. All furniture has been hand-picked or developed to create a perfect balance between form and function, building and interior.
client: International Business School Kolding, Denmark
completed: 2006
International Business College Kolding is to be extended with a new wing that is sympathetic to the character of the existing building. Thus, the lowest storey of the new building is in red brick, just like the original college building. By the same token, the uppermost horizontal strip of ribbon windows will be framed by a copper border that runs the full length of the façade, fastening on to the original building and thereby providing a vividly articulated connecting link. The building will form the setting for the creative teaching of foundation course students. The interior is clustered around a 3-storey high atrium with a mirror pond at the base and the skies above.
client: Interlex Advokater, Aarhus, Denmark
schmidt hammer lassen design has created a new space and interior design for the Aarhus based lawfirm Interlex Advokater. The project includes a new design for the exterior entrance area/facade and the interior of the reception area including new room structure, surfaces, reception desk, lighting and lounge furnishing. The former arrival, -reception and waiting area had become far to small and no longer suitable for Interlex´needs in a busy every day life. The solution was a new exterior facade/entrance and indoor to integrate a former meeting room as a part of a new and spacious room with possibility for both work, passage, wardrobe and waiting facilities.
The space is furnished with a custom made reception counter in Cameo White Corian and beside this with our own furniture design from Piiroinen (Flakes Lounge and table), JENSENplus (Blackbox bench and side tables)
client: Kromann Reumert, Copenhagen, Denmark
completed: 2009
For the extension of Kromann Reumerts office in Copenhagen, we created a new interior office, meeting and lounge space with focus on making a functional yet intimate and cozy atmosphere. The extension of Kromann Reumerts head quarter in Copenhagen is situated in the neighbour building and connected to the original head quarter building by a new walkway hanging between the facades. Because of the physical distance it was of great importance to create a visible and “professional emotional” connection and at the same time respect the fact that the new space is created in another time and place.

client: Fredericia Municipality
completed: 2006
The beautiful city hall of Fredericia is designed by Haldor Gunløgsson and Jørn Nielsen (inaugu-rated 1965). It faced a large renovation as it in 2005 was decided to collaborate with schmidt hammer lassen on this project. Over time, the town hall had been through several alterations, and alltogether they comasked and blurred the consequent and conceptual architectural language of the building. Our task was set upon creating a total master plan for the renovation project and to rebuild and re-design the new Citizens Service, which is placed in the hall right beside the entrance.
client: Middelfart Municipality
completed: 2005
The interior design of the library has been a very close collaboration with the development of the house. Materials and colours are repeated from house to inventory to create a homogeneous environment in close connetion to the architecture and to integrate the public foyer space and the library space as a visual whole. The library is located at the “Culture Island” - a house created by schmidt hammer lassen architects at the water front to gather the various cultural activities of Middelfart in a vibrant and intimate space and to honour the amazing location by the Fjord. Colours, materials and signage are kept to a minimum and designed to increase the awareness of the unique location - bringing visual focus and contact to the exterior and at the same time creating a simple and logic interior planning.

As part of Bruun’s Galleri, the KMPG head office is linked in a synergistic relationship with central Århus. The 17-storey office tower affords an outstanding view of the city, the bay and the landscape - and to enable all to take optimal advantage of the location, the primary communal functions are situated on the uppermost levels. Via an open double height stairwell, the reception on the 15th floor provides access to the restaurant on the floor below. A mobile wall allows the restaurant to be screened off so as to double as a conference room for approx. 100 persons.

Transparency and light characterize the interior by a number of special objects that define the different areas of the meeting centre.
A 20 m long, green wall is a key element to show the guests lounge area in its whole. The wall is planted with a smooth, fine and vibrant green surface. An eye catcher in form of a 1.6 meter high water sculpture is placed in the heart of the building and is surrounded by mirroring water walls. A great balance of noble materials, art and unique design solution.

client: VIA University, Aarhus
completed: 2011
Our interior project for the new premises of VIA University College in Skejby, Aarhus (Denmark) is developed as a simple and natural extension of the building using the integrated color scale as guideline for the furnishing. The house itself is designed as a rather “rough” house. Few and simple, industrial materials are used to create a calm and clear frame for the more than 2000 students daily life - realising that this many different people and activities itself takes up considerable amount of space both visually and physically. All loose furniture are “casually” spread over the interior - each given colors after the overall color scale and in this way emphasizing the concept - providing the students with possibilities for either private/intimate or a more exposed seating.
