Flakes is comprised of two types of material: a chromium-plated tubular steel frame and a seat and back in glass fibre. The properties of glass fibre make it possible to create a very thin glass fibre shell, a slender flake - hence the chair’s name. The transparent seat is constructed of five layers of laminated glass fibre and may be cast with embedded materials of various kinds. One version, for example, is cast with embedded carbon fibre, while a variety of coloured versions have been coated in varnish. There is also an upholstered edition of the chair. While the transparent version of the chair appears light and discreet - a shadowless chair - the varnished and upholstered editions present a more striking and graphic appearance.

SOLID is a range of urban furniture and LED lighting fixtures, created with focus on optimised balance between design, craftsmanship and sustainability.
With inspiration from the more “rough” industrial products in concrete, SOLID is developed with delicate details truly showing the unlimited areas where “modern” concrete can be used. As a material, concrete brings obvious advantages
to urban environments and accommodate the need for strong, easily maintainable products.
The various bollards consists of the same concrete base - only the steel top changes from product to product and thereby allows rational flexibility in production. If the base is damaged, the top will simply be mounted on a new base and thereby recycled. SOLID sustainability and design.
Honorary mention
Fibreglass in Bloom
The Flakes chair was created in the spring of 2004 for the Aarhus Art Museum, ARoS, in Denmark. It was designed by the renowned Danish design company shldesign (a part of shl architects) and the Finnish manufacturer, Arvo Piiroinen Oy, was responsible for the product development work.
This stackable chair of translucent fibreglass has a light feel to it. The fragility of the material, however, is only a positive illusion, for the chair is made of durable materials for long-term use. The seat is of fibreglass and the frame is of steel tubing. Ecological considerations have been taken into account:
